New Scientist article An English robot is already able to say “I like you” and “I don’t know you” in a language that’s more than a thousand years old, but it needs a lot more effort.
The team from the University of Leeds and the University College London, in collaboration with colleagues from the European Space Agency, has built a machine that can learn to say the words “I love you” from video and audio recordings, but not write them down or write them in a word processor.
The researchers used two different robotic arms to learn to speak, which was easy enough.
The first arm had a large camera on it, and it used a camera and microphone to record the video.
The second arm could also record the audio, which made the task a lot easier.
The researchers then used a neural network, which uses deep learning techniques, to learn how to identify the words that are spoken.
When the researchers used this training to train a new robot, it came up with about five words that it could use to write down a sentence, such as “I adore you”, “I wish you a good day”, or “I appreciate you”.
The robot is not perfect.
The team says that it will take a few iterations before it can read the language, but they believe that the learning process will be quicker if the machine learns to speak like humans.
What does it mean for the future?
This is the first time that researchers have shown that an artificial intelligence system can learn new words by recording video and writing them down, which makes it a lot closer to human-like intelligence.
However, the team are not ready to declare that the robot will be able to write or read language like humans, and the robot needs more training before it will be capable of doing so.
“In the future, we hope to have robot-like robots capable of writing and reading speech,” said Dr Paul Smith, one of the lead researchers on the project.
“But at the moment, this is just a step in the right direction.”
