A doctor has been found dead at a hospital in northern Nigeria after being shot in the chest by a suspected gang member.
The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) said the 37-year-old was found in his bed on Monday morning.
Nina Kaga, a spokesperson for the association, told the Associated Press news agency he had been shot in a rural area.
The incident took place on Sunday in the town of Kota Kota in the city of Damaturu.
The hospital is located close to the city’s main shopping area.
Local media reports said that the doctor was on the second floor of the building when gunmen shot him.NMA spokesperson Muhyuddin Akhtar said the doctor’s condition was stable.
The NMA, which is allied with the ruling military-backed National Democratic Front (NDF), was accused of orchestrating mass killings of members of the community in the early 1990s.
